BMW replaced the car entirely for 2023. New platform, new engine tune at 241 horsepower, a seven-speed dual clutch in place of the old torque converter, and a completely redesigned interior. If you shopped an X1 two years ago, you were looking at a different vehicle.

The change you notice immediately is the BMW Curved Display, a single pane of glass arcing from the driver's side across the centre stack, running iDrive 8. There is almost no switchgear left. It is the interior that made the new X1 reviewed the way it was, and it is the reason to look at a 2023 rather than a cheaper 2022.

The rest is the usual BMW competence. The 2.0L TwinPower Turbo four drives all four wheels through xDrive, and the Premium Essential Package brings the panoramic moonroof, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, power folding mirrors, and comfort access with push button start. There is a hands-free power liftgate, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate, LED headlights with automatic high beams and rain sensing wipers. The driver assistance suite covers blind spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, front collision mitigation and rear park assist.

Built in Regensburg, Germany, and maintained entirely inside BMW's own service network at BMW Langley and Auto West BMW, including battery replacement, cabin filter service and full fluid maintenance in early 2025. Factory-trained hands, factory parts, the whole way through.
